Following a globally competitive race for the next leader of the World Trade Organization, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s nominee for the position of the Director-General for the world reputable trade organization, is in massive lead in the highly competitive race.
Iweala emerged winner of the highly competitive race after polling 104 votes from 164 member countries to defeat her opponent, South Korea’s Trade Minister, Yoo Myung-hee.
The Nigeria’s two-time former Finance Minister during the tenures of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, Dr Okonjo-Iweala has an extensive international experience working as a former Managing Director of the World Bank and as a Chairman, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization.
Okonjo-Iweala’s success as WTO DG makes her the first African and female Director-Deneral of the international body in its 25-year of existence.
The official announcement is expected to be made later today by WTO.
