Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton have moved closer to winning their parties’ nominations with a series of victories in the Super Tuesday elections, the biggest day of the primary campaign.
Clinton and Trump each won at least seven of 11 state races as they distanced themselves from party rivals and looked ahead to the November 8 presidential election.
Trump, the real-estate magnate and reality-TV star, won in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia on Super Tuesday.
Clinton, a former secretary of state and senator, won in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Her wins in the seven states have now earned her 441 of the 865 delegates at stake.
By winning Oklahoma, Alaska and his home state of Texas, Sen. Ted Cruz can now strongly assert that he is the best alternative to Trump.
The Super Tuesday victories does not guarantee a Trump-Clinton matchup in November. But the results, taken as a whole, suggest the most probable outcome remains intact. Barring a dramatic, unforeseen occurrence, it’s Trump for the Republicans, Clinton for the Democrats.
