Manchester City have informed Spanish side Athletic Bilbao they will meet Aymeric Laporte’s €50 million (£39.2m) buyout clause as part of efforts to strengthen the squad in the summer, according to reports in Spain.
Incoming City manager Pep Guardiola had showed interest in the French international and the club has moved swiftly to get the signature of the central defender.
The Bayern coach also showed interest in Everton’s John Stones and Reece Oxford as options to bolster City’s defence as the club aims for a title challenge next season.
