Facebook recently made the decision to discontinue support for BlackBerry, meaning they will end support for BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS versions 7.1 at the end of 2016. WhatsApp led the way earlier this month announcing it’ll also end support for Blackberry.
“While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future”, the messaging app’s post says.
Blackberry smartphone users are extremely disappointed with the company’s decision on this and they have taken it upon themselves to express how they feel on social media, using the hashtag #ILoveBB10Apps.
As of March 31st 2016, BlackBerry smartphone users will have to update the Facebook app in order to continue using Facebook but the app is nothing more than a link to its mobile website since the current Facebook application will cease to work on BlackBerry smartphones but the social media giant encouraged those who wish to continue using Facebook to move to the web because the web-based experience will provide the most feature rich alternative than what their native app could ever provide.
And if you’re hoping on searching for a third-party app for Facebook, you won’t be getting any luck there since BlackBerry noted that Facebook had opted to “discontinue support of their essential APIs.” These APIs are what developers use to build on when they create their own third-party apps.
