The Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, shocked many Bayelsans yesterday, when he personally led top officials of the state to begin demolition of illegal buildings on highbrow areas in Yenagoa, the state capital.
The land on which properties were demolished was acquired for senior government officials by the administration of the late DSP Alamieyeseigha, but was encroached upon by individuals even after compensation was paid to the community.
To serve as warning to other defaulters, the first structure demolished by the demolition team was an uncompleted filling station at Otiotio area of Yenagoa, belonging to his in-law, Walton Liverpool, who is the Executive Secretary of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB),
Dickson, while addressing journalists during the demolition, said all the illegal buildings and structures on government property would be pulled down. He said the exercise was to signpost the commencement of ‘Operation Recover All Government Lands’, noting that the demolished filling station violated the law.
