The digital PR landscape is evolving at lightning speed, driven by the twin engines of big data and artificial intelligence (AI). What once required entire teams – media monitoring, sentiment analysis, content ideation, and even crisis response – is now achievable with a few smart tools and a solid strategy. For professionals looking to thrive, not just survive, in this new frontier, AI is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity.

As Prof. Silk Ugwu-Ogbu of the Lagos Business School, LBS, Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, would say: “AI is not here to replace the PR or marketing communications professionals; it’s here to make them super performers.”

Here are five AI tools every digital PR and marketing communications professionals should not only know but integrate into their daily workflow.

Brandwatch – For Social Listening and Sentiment Analysis

Why it matters:

In PR, perception is reality. Brandwatch uses AI to listen to what people are saying across social media, blogs, forums, and news sites in real time. This allows PR pros to monitor brand sentiment, emerging crises, and competitor performance as they occur minute-by-minute – 24/7.

It is reported that when United Airlines faced a PR crisis in 2017 after a passenger was forcibly removed from a flight, social listening tools like Brandwatch recorded a 127% surge in negative sentiment within hours. Brands that use AI to monitor such trends can intervene faster and with data-driven clarity.

GrammarlyGO – For AI-Powered Writing and Tone Optimization

Why it matters:

Digital PR involves creating tons of written content – from press releases to blog posts and executive bios. GrammarlyGO, an AI writing assistant, does more than correct grammar – it adjusts tone, rewrites sentences for clarity, and helps you stay on-brand.
When a Lagos-based PR firm used GrammarlyGO to refine campaign messages for an international tech client, they saw a 40% increase in journalist engagement due to clearer, more concise messaging.

3. Lately.ai – For Social Media Content Repurposing

Why it matters:

Content fatigue is real. Lately.ai uses AI to turn long-form content like webinars, blogs, and reports into bite-sized, high-performing social media posts.
After running a digital conference on branding in Africa, BrandiQ Academy repurposed its keynote transcripts with Lately.ai into 60+ posts. The result? A 300% increase in social media engagement within a week.

4. Meltwater – For Media Intelligence and Influencer Mapping

Why it matters:

Knowing which journalist covers your beat—or which influencer aligns with your brand—is gold. Meltwater uses AI to analyze media coverage, identify key reporters, and track influencer networks relevant to your industry.

Use case:
During the 2023 Afrobeats4Africa campaign, the organizers used Meltwater to target lifestyle and music journalists who had written favourably about similar artists. The AI-generated media list had a 78% pick-up rate – far higher than traditional mass pitching.

5. ChatGPT – For Ideation, Messaging, and Scenario Testing

Why it matters:

From brainstorming campaign ideas to simulating interview questions for a client’s media training, ChatGPT is the Swiss army knife of digital communication.
A political campaign team in Abuja used ChatGPT to test over 50 variations of a candidate’s policy pitch, adjusting tone, emotion, and clarity. They reported a 55% increase in audience comprehension and recall during town halls.

Final Thoughts

AI is no magic wand – it still requires strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and storytelling skills. But it gives digital PR professionals the edge to do their jobs smarter, faster, and more impactfully. As digital communications professional Quadri Balogun says, “The future of PR is hybrid – human-led, AI-augmented. Learn the relevant tools. Master the art. Get engaged. Get involved”
