Shortly after a statement credited to Atletico Madrid President, Enrique Cerezo that he has rejected an offer for Jose Gimenez, Manchester City has denied making a £78m bid (€85m) for the central defender.
Speaking to a Spanish sports radio programme, the cinematographer and producer said: “We did receive the offer, but Gimenez is a magnificent player and we are interested in having magnificent players in the team.”
Manchester City, though, has reacted with surprise at the quotes. The club has said it will not pay anything like that amount for a player in that position. According to a club source, even though it was no secret that Manchester City was bent on signing a centre-back but Jose Gimenez could only have been looked at as an alternative to Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly before the transfer window closes
Any move for the 25-year-old Uruguay international would be further complicated by the fact that he tested positive for coronavirus recently, and is currently self-isolating.
