Sundry Markets Limited, owners of the Marketsquare supermarket chain – Nigeria’s largest indigenous grocery retail brand – has been honoured as the “Most Sustainable Retail Organisation” at the Africa Retail Awards 2025.

The award recognises the company’s steadfast commitment to sustainability, ethical business practices, and positive community impact, according to a statement from the firm on Sunday.

The Africa Retail Awards, organised by the Africa Retail Academy in partnership with Lagos Business School, Nairametrics, and KPMG, celebrate excellence and innovation across the continent’s retail sector.

Sundry Markets stood out for its holistic approach to sustainability, consistently integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance principles into its operations.

Commenting on the recognition, Sustainability Lead for Sundry Markets Limited, Mrs Dubem Kekachi, said, “This achievement reflects our belief that retail can be a force for good. We are proud to lead the way in creating a greener, more inclusive future for Africa’s retail industry.” She highlighted that the award underscores the company’s ongoing commitment to setting new sustainability benchmarks in African retail.

Sundry Markets’ sustainability initiatives are wide-ranging and include reducing environmental impact through energy efficiency and waste reduction, promoting fair labour practices, ethical sourcing, and actively engaging in community and social development programmes. The company also emphasises transparency in stakeholder engagement and sustainability reporting, ensuring accountability across its operations.

The company expressed gratitude to its dedicated team, business partners, and customers, acknowledging their support in advancing its sustainability mission. Sundry Markets reiterated its commitment to responsible retailing, innovation, and the continuous pursuit of practices that benefit society and the environment.

As a pioneer in modern retail in Nigeria, Sundry Markets operates an extensive network of stores that deliver quality, convenience, and value to customers. Sustainability remains central to the company’s growth strategy, and it continues to expand while promoting responsible retail operations across the country. By combining commercial success with strong ESG practices, Sundry Markets Limited has positioned itself as a leading example of sustainable retail leadership in Africa, setting a high standard for other companies to follow in the continent’s evolving retail landscape
