NECCI PR Roundtable 23rd Edition Set To Hold, Aim To Tackle Illicit Pharma Trade

In response to the escalating issue of illicit trade in the pharmaceutical industry, the 23rd edition of the NECCI Public Relations Roundtable is set to convene on October 27 and 28, 2023, at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. Under the theme “Fighting the Scourge of Illicit Trade in the Pharma Industry: The Role of Communication,” the event aims to address the pressing challenges posed by counterfeit drugs, substandard medications, and unauthorized distribution.

This year’s roundtable recognizes the imperative for collective action against these threats and sheds light on the vital role of communication in this endeavor.

The National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHDA) reveals that over 70 percent of medicines dispensed in Nigeria are sub-standard, posing severe health risks to the population. The Brazzaville Foundation reports that approximately 120,000 Africans die annually due to substandard drugs. In Nigeria, individuals suffer from a range of health issues, including loss of sight, hearing defects, kidney, and liver problems, attributed to substandard drugs or their misuse.

Founder Nkechi Ali-Balogun emphasizes the pivotal role of communication in addressing the illicit trade of pharmaceuticals. Effective communication, she asserts, can empower consumers, raise awareness, and contribute to bringing perpetrators to justice.

Esteemed speakers at the event include Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, Mbang Femi-Oyewo, Bolarinwa Onaolapo, Prof. Adeyeye, and Pharm. Femi Soremekun. They will address various aspects of the pharmaceutical sector, proposing solutions and fostering discussions.

The fight against illicit trade requires a multifaceted approach, combining communication, regulation, technology, and collaboration. NECCI PR Roundtable aims to gather experts to examine and propose viable solutions through strategic communication.

Renowned figures from diverse sectors, including Prof. Olufemi M. Awoyemi and Dr. David Mrisho, will contribute to the discussions. The event attracts key players in the pharmaceutical industry, business leaders, public relations professionals, and stakeholders.

Details for the event are as follows:

  • Venue: Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos
  • Date: Thursday, 26 & 27 October 2023
  • Time: 10:00 am

In conclusion, the NECCI PR Roundtable’s commitment to addressing illicit trade in the pharmaceutical sector stands as a testament to its two-decade legacy as Nigeria’s premier Public Relations Conference. With an emphasis on communication strategies, this edition aims to foster collaboration, awareness, and actionable solutions in the fight against illicit trade, safeguarding public health and national security.
