After five months of waiting for the processing of the budget by the National Assembly and subsequent submission to the presidency, Nigerians heaved a sigh of relief with the announcement that the Acting President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo will accent to the document today Thursday, June 1, 2017. But feelers from the Presidency, especially the statement from the Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly, Senator Ita Enang, that consultations are still being held on the budget opens a window for concern.
Senator Enang confirmed to Punch that “There is no date fixed for the signing of the 2017 budget yet”.
In the same development, the Acting President is at this moment in Calabar,Cross River State on an official visit.
This came on the heels of Tuesday’s clash between men of the Nigerian Police force and the Nigerian Navy which left in its wake, a burnt police station,at least two policemen dead, while others sustained some degrees of injury.
Osinbajo was received at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport by the state Governor, Ben Ayade. The governor immediately led the Acting President from the airport to the palace of the Obong of Calabar.
During the visit, Acting President Osinbajo will commission the Calabar Monorail, the Calabar International Convention Centre, and the Cross River Garment Factory.
He will thereafter visit the Calabar Rice City located at the Ayade Industrial Park, and also inspect the Calabar Pharmaceutical Company both of which are currently under construction.
Prof. Osinbajo will wrap up his official visit to the state with a Town Hall meeting and clinic to engage with owners of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in Cross River.
Considering the present security situation in Calabar, one can only pray and hope that the acting president’s stay in Calabar would be peaceful and uneventful.
