Fiba reveals bidding process for 2023 World Cup

Lukmon Oloyede.

The International Basketball Federation (Fiba) has disclosed the bidding process for its 2023 World Cup, a tournament for which a multiple territory hosting model could be adopted for the first time.

Fiba will send requests for expression of interest in its flagship national team tournament to all of its member federations this month. Those wishing to be taken into consideration must confirm their interest by August 31. Following the applicant phase and the candidate phase, Fiba’s Central Board will ultimately announce the host or hosts of the 2023 World Cup at its end-of-year meeting in 2017.

The 2023 World Cup has the potential to be the first organised by and staged in more than one territory after the Central Board came out in favour of receiving bids from multiple host countries at a meeting held in March.

The Executive Committee approved a process to replace Mr Xiao Tian (China) and Mrs Julia Anikeeva (Russia) as members of the FIBA Central Board.

China’s plans for the World Cup outline that the event will be held in more host cities than ever before. Fiba awarded the hosting rights in August, with China defeating a rival bid from the Philippines.

Spain hosted the most recent edition of the World Cup in 2014, with the United States defeating Serbia 129-92 in the gold medal game.
