Founder of Silverbird Group, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has urged the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, to release Ese Oruru to her parents.
Murray-Bruce tweeted: “IGP Arase, Ese is a minor and can’t consent to marry. The Constitution is clear. Your duty is to ensure her release to her parents.
“After investigation, Emir Sanusi ruled it was wrong for a Ese to consent to marriage as a minor and that she return to her family.”
While noting that the Nigerian constitution is no respecter of persons, Murray-Bruce, who noted that the Nigerian Constitution “respects no person”, condemned the police boss for his comment that Ese’s release was delayed because of the Emir of Kano’s Hajj trip.
“So for the IGP to say that Ese’s release is “dependent” holds no water. There are no legal or constitutional grounds for that.
The ordeal of the 14-year old, who was abducted and forcefully married to one Yuniusa from Kano in 2015, forced Nigerians on social media to demand her release on Sunday.
Earlier on Sunday, Arase had said that the help of the Kano’s Emir, at whose palace the 14-year old minor was being held, was needed to release Ese.
But the Common-sense campaigner told the police boss to release Ese or the matter would be taken to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights for redress.
