Alcohol Advertising Gets a Hit in Scotland

BrandiQ Reports

Why should anyone crackdown on advertising – considering the benefit of advertising to both businesses and to the people. Advertising helps to inform consumers about the existence of a product or service, and how to locate where to get the product or service, and in fact, how to use such a product or service. It serves both an informative, educative and entertainment function.

So, why should anyone want to crack down on such an invaluable area of practice and business. This is the question on the lips of Scotish citizens when news filtered in that Scotland has launched a consultation on proposals to restrict alcohol advertising in public, supermarkets and sporting event.

According to reports the proposal is part of a plan to reduce the appeal of alcohol to the youth. The ban proposal could affect branded sports gear, billboards, public transport and newspapers.

In a BBC article they reported that Scotland has more alcohol ads in top level football than other European football leagues. In June a report from Alcohol Focus Scotland stated that consumers are bombarded with positive messaging through alcohol advertising. The group called on the government to intervene.
