Nigerian Entrepreneurs Exploit #MadeInNigeria Campaign

By Gilbert Alasa.
Some business owners in Nigeria on Twitter may have woken up on the wrong side of the bed on Thursday morning. But there’s more to cheer about just by virtue of a hashtag that trended just over a week ago.
Nigeria’s ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) took to its Twitter handle this morning to throw a fresh marketing window on the laps of budding entrepreneurs.
The party urges Nigerian business owners – specifically Small and Medium-scale Enterprises – to promote their products and service offerings via the #MadeInNigeria campaign. Business owners are encouraged to take a photo of their products and contacts and tweet same at the party’s handle, using the #MadeInNigeria hashtag.

The #MadeInNigeria campaign is a key component of the #BuyNaijaToSaveTheNaira crusade inspired by the launch of the Made in Aba trade Fair by Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
At the fair, Senate President assured local manufacturers that the Senate would amend the Procurement Act to promote their products.
Recently, the Federal Government signed a memorandum of understanding with NASCO to produce high nutrient density biscuit to feed about 30 million school children below the age of 13.
In what seems like a move to discourage importation and a worrying consumerist culture, Nigeria’s Twitter heavyweights like Japheth Omojuwa and Ben Murray-Bruce have taken to social media to showcase their patronage of local brands.
But with a 75% crash in the price of crude oil, a weak currency and plans by the Federal Government to borrow about $9billion to connect the nation’s missing financial dots, it remains to be seen how this campaign would restore the glory of the nation’s ailing economy.
