Indigenous tech firm Skypixels has introduced Nigeria to a new frontier in visual storytelling and brand engagement with the unveiling of the country’s first large-scale drone light show—signalling a major shift in how entertainment, advertising, and live experiences are conceptualised and delivered.
The debut showcase, held at the Lagos Polo Club, featured a synchronised fleet of 1,000 drones, each equipped with GPS and real-time kinematic positioning systems, enabling precision-controlled aerial choreography and dynamic digital displays.
From Fireworks to Programmable Sky Media
At its core, the innovation represents a transition from traditional fireworks to programmable, data-driven visual experiences.
Founder and CEO of Skypixels, Rotimi Makanjuola, described the technology as a natural evolution in entertainment formats, highlighting its superior creative and functional capabilities.
“What we have here tonight is called a drone show. If you look at past innovations, we used to have fireworks, which people use during most celebrations. The use of fireworks has its own safety concerns aside from the impact on the environment. So, there has been a shift from that entertainment style into something that is more contemporary and modern.
“The advantage is that drones are used to do something similar to fireworks, but even more than what fireworks do. Fireworks can just give you some colour displays and sounds, but this is able to give you graphics and text in an animated way as well. These are GPS-enabled drones, with RTK that hooks up to GPS and enables stability during flight. So, you need programmers who would work on the sequence or flight path that it is going to take,” Makanjuola stated.
A New Canvas for Brands and Storytellers
Unlike conventional displays, drone light shows transform the night sky into a programmable digital canvas—capable of rendering logos, messages, and animated visuals in real time.
For brands, this introduces a powerful new medium for high-impact experiential marketing, where storytelling moves beyond screens into immersive, physical environments.
Makanjuola further explained the operational logic behind the system:
“So, the question is: how come they do not collide? It is because each of them has been programmed to have its own flight sequence, and you’re able to come up with the choreography. In other words, how do you want it to move in the sky, maybe like flashing text, graphics, images, or other designs as well?
It is available for government agencies, non-government organisations, corporate entities, and even individuals. For instance, if you have a celebration or event, say a 10th anniversary, you could have the logo up in the air in formation for a maximum period of about 20 minutes. And it also depends on the number of minutes you want it to run or the number of drones as well.”
Technology Meets Precision Engineering
According to Skypixels Programme Coordinator, Ese Obukonise, the system relies on highly coordinated programming, where each drone follows a unique trajectory within a larger synchronised framework.
“People often wonder how 1,000 drones can fly together without crashing,” he said. “The answer lies in programming. Each drone has its own sequence, and when combined, they create a seamless choreography in the sky. This choreography allows for complex formations, ranging from corporate logos and celebratory messages to intricate animated visuals that transform the night sky into a digital canvas,” he submitted.
Regulation, Safety, and Environmental Advantage
As drone usage expands into public-facing applications, regulatory compliance and safety remain central.
Obukonise noted that operations are conducted under approvals from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, with additional coordination involving security and aviation authorities to ensure safe deployment.
“You know fireworks will definitely leave their marks on the environment, emissions in terms of smoke and fumes, but this has no emissions. Another advantage is sustainability. We have flight limits and geofencing, among others. Even before you come to the site, you need to carry out checks for weather and other factors that could impact your flight. We also go the extra mile to work with Air Traffic Control to ensure this doesn’t affect flight paths for aircraft. As I said earlier, we also have height ceilings and geofencing to ensure the drones don’t stray and will return if there is an issue,” Obukonise said.
The integration of fail-safe systems – including geofencing and automated return-to-home functions – further reinforces operational reliability.
Beyond Entertainment: A Multi-Sector Technology Play
While the launch focuses on entertainment and events, Skypixels is positioning drone technology as a broader innovation platform with applications across multiple sectors.
Makanjuola highlighted use cases spanning agriculture, construction, security, and infrastructure maintenance, noting that the expansion into advertising and live experiences represents just one dimension of a rapidly evolving ecosystem.
“We’re happy to be the first company in Nigeria to have over 1,000 drones, and we can create pictures. It’s a new way of advancing the technology that is going on around the world. Not many people have seen it before. That’s why we’re quite excited to launch this. This goes up to about 200 feet,” he concluded.
